Amalfi

One of my favorite places on the planet is Amalfi. In the Middle Ages, Amalfi was one of the most powerful cities in Italy, a maritime republic rivalling Venice and Genoa. Here is what it looks like:

Amalfi is located on the Amalfi Coast of Italy, which looks like this:

Tip: drive down the Amalfi Coast from Napoli to the Emerald Grotto, then take a boat the rest of the way to Amalfi. Here is the view as you enter the harbour:

Here are some views of the town:

My favorite place to have lunch in Amalfi is the Albergo Cappuccini. Here it is:

An outdoor elevator takes you up the side of the cliff. Meals are a bit pricey, but worth it, because -- here is the view from the terrace at the Albergo Cappuccini:

Finally, here are a couple of paintings of Amalfi:

Places Near Amalfi

Another of my favorite places is Capri:

Here's the same view from higher up. (Be sure to take the chairlift to the top -- the most beautiful view on the planet.) Those are the Faraglione Rocks on the right in both pictures.

And here is the Blue Grotto in Capri:

Just up the coast from Amalfi and Capri is the city of Napoli (Naples):

The mountain across the Bay of Naples is Vesuvius. And here is Pompeii, the city destroyed and preserved (how Hegelian! -- a true Aufhebung) by Vesuvius:

Finally, I don't know where this is, but it's probably near Amalfi! (Everything in the Mediterranean is sort of near Amalfi....)
